I was inspired to make embroidered clothing, and by sewing projects at the time. To do this, I used an old sewing machine, stepper motors, and a lead screws from an old 3d printer. I developed Python code that allows an image to be uploaded and generates G-code that controls the sewing machine motor and the X-Y axis of the fabric. Converting the 3d printer to a 2-axis movement required designing 3d printed components and fixing them with the help of aluminum extrusion. To control the sewing machine’s stitch, I used another stepper motor that connected to the same drive belt as the old motor. The x-y control worked very effectively for moving the fabric to the designated place; however, the sewing machine motor was too slow and not powerful enough. I produced some simple text embroideries and some small images.
